About us
The Horse Trust is the oldest horse charity in the world and was founded by Miss Ann Lindo in
1886 in response to the publication of Anna Sewell’s classic novel 'Black Beauty'. Her
objective was to provide respite care for the broken-down horses of the London cab trade
and she started by borrowing fields from a friend. Eventually Miss Lindo rented stables in
Acton, London before being able to purchase premises in Cricklewood and then Borehamwood.
Since the 1970’s The Horse Trust has enjoyed its beautiful home in the rolling Chiltern Hills in
Speen, near Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.
Over the years it has grown in stature with an agenda that encompasses
welfare, science and education as well as continuing the tradition of the charity - to provide
sanctuary for retired working equines.
Our Residents
Horses, ponies and donkeys arrive at the stables from all walks of life to spend their twilight
years enjoying the company of each other whilst grazing peacefully in the undulating fields
of the Chiltern countryside. The grooms at the charity are completely devoted to the 100 in
their care - whether it be an 18 hh, majestic shire horse or a rescued miniature donkey,
a 17.1 hh, brave police horse or a rather scruffy, elderly Shetland pony – each and every one
of them receives the best of loving care and will remain at the sanctuary in safety for the rest
of their days.
The Horse Trust also gives sanctuary to those poor, unfortunate horses,
ponies and donkeys that have suffered and need the specialist care and expertise the charity
can provide in abundance to nurture them back to good health.
Your Support
Open to the public, the charity relies on public donations for its survival and its ongoing ability
to provide lifetime retirement for horses in need. The charity holds demonstrations during
visiting times in the school holidays on horse care and welfare. Each horse costs £10 per day
to care for at the sanctuary – your support is greatly appreciated.
